The 'Grand Prix for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises', awarded by the Oskar Patzelt Foundation, is Germany's most coveted business accolade. Each November, local authorities and associations, institutions and companies are invited to nominate outstanding small and medium-sized enterprises to take part in the competition.
This year, we are among the contenders for this sought-after award. We will find out whether we are actually one of the lucky winners or not on 29 September when this is announced in Würzburg. This is where the best small and medium-sized enterprises will be publicly honoured at a glitzy award ceremony.
Our company’s administration moved into our new office complex in Hellenberg in the industrial area of Wrexer Teich on 02.01.2012 as planned. Press release dated 27.07.2011
In recent years, changes to framework conditions regarding energy policy have led to a significant increase in cultivable land used for alternative energies in the form of biomass. In order to cover demand, it is of great importance that the processes involved in harvesting renewable raw materials are optimised, thus enabling the cost-effective cultivation of alternative resources.
It is for this reason that the Institute for Agricultural Machinery and Renewable Energies at Cologne University of Applied Sciences (LTRE) successfully initiated a research project on 01.01.2011 in cooperation with the medium-sized company Jäkel GmbH & Co. KG. The primary aim of the research project is to significantly reduce the machine costs for harvesting using new cutting processes and knife systems in order to considerably increase the efficiency of the process chain for biomass production. This should contribute to the economical production of fast-growing energy crops. The research project is being funded with nearly €300,000 from the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology via the Zentrales Innovationsprogramm Mittelstand (ZIM), a programme to support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
Its aims are being realised through the scientific study of cutting processes. The relevant construction parameters for the design of knife systems can then be derived from this. Optimising these parameters leads to an increase in life span and cutting performance and has a positive effect on the energy efficiency of the harvesting process.
The research team led by Prof. Till Meinel has made it their aim to implement new solution methods when developing new knife systems.
The scientific study should result in a matrix programmed with every possible variant of cutting edge geometry, materials and process parameters. For the cooperation partner, this should serve as a future development tool for new knife systems.
The first functional model of a newly developed knife system is planned for spring 2012, which will then be verified in field tests.

This year once again saw some of our long-standing employees being honoured. During a celebration, Managing Directors Frank and Udo Jäkel thanked those celebrating their company anniversaries with a certificate and gift.
The following people were honoured: Michael Bode (25 years), Karl-Heinz Römer (25 years), Thorsten Lerch (10 years), Jakob Rieb (10 years), David Ott (10 years).
We are certified according to DIN EN ISO 14001 Environmental Management and DIN EN ISO 9001 Quality Management.
We frequently hear in the press about donor campaigns to register potential stem cell donors. These cost a lot of money, which must be paid by the donors themselves. As this is not always possible, these campaigns are dependent on donations. As has already been the case for many other campaigns, it is thanks to countless companies that all those interested can be registered in the corresponding databases. In this way, Jäkel is also contributing to social projects, such as the recent donor campaign for 15-year-old leukaemia sufferer Miriam from Marsberg-Essentho.
Mayoral candidate for Diemelstadt, Elmar Schröder, paid us a visit in August. The move to the industrial area in Rhoden and a research project in cooperation with the University of Applied Sciences in Cologne were among the subjects discussed.
As every year, several long-serving employees were also honoured in 2010. During a celebration, Managing Directors Frank and Udo Jäkel and Senior Manager Hans-Georg Jäkel thanked those celebrating their company anniversaries with a certificate and gift.
The following people were honoured: Bernhard Bracht (35 years), Antonius Besse, Harry Scholz, Jürgen Jochheim (25 years), Alexander Rau, Dimitrij Maslov und Ingo Schicker (10 years).
In the summer of 2010, we carried out a full fire extinguishing practice for our staff. This included theory and training in the practical use of fire extinguishers. The management would like to thank all participants and hopes that the skills learned will never have to be used.
